ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on knowledge and use of Glasgow coma scale for neurological assessment of patients among nurses in specialist hospital Yola. Specifically, the study aimed to examine if nurses in specialist hospital Yola are knowledgeable about the use of Glasgow coma scale for neurological assessment of patients, examine if nurses in specialist hospital Yola uses Glasgow coma scale as part of the initial assessment of patients who have experienced trauma as well as guiding them to make treatment decisions, and examine if nurses in specialist hospital Yola uses Glasgow coma scale to monitor changes in patient’s level of consciousness over time as well as communicate with other members of the healthcare team about a patient’s neurological status. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. Questionnaire was used for data collection and was analysed using the frequency counts and percentages. A total of 100 respondents were conveniently selected as sample size comprising of nurses in specialist hospital Yola. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that nurses in specialist hospital Yola are not knowledgeable about the use of Glasgow coma scale for neurological assessment of patients. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that despite the reported knowledge about the GCS, it's crucial to continuously evaluate and improve nursing practices related to neurological assessment. Establishing feedback mechanisms, such as regular audits or surveys, can help identify areas for improvement and address any gaps in knowledge or practice. Additionally, integrating quality improvement initiatives focused on enhancing GCS proficiency can lead to better patient outcomes and overall quality of care. Encouraging open communication channels where nurses can provide feedback and suggestions for improvement will contribute to a culture of continuous learning and excellence in patient care.
